Mindfulness
Mindfulness is a way of being that is sometimes described as “wakefulness”. When we are mindful we can respond to each moment with freshness, free of the habitual reactions of the busy doing mode, and able to see the choices in front of us.
Although mindfulness training is a form of brain training, it can be practised through sitting, lying, standing, walking and stretching. These practices offer us the opportunity to stop and see what is going on, to recognise our patterns of thoughts and actions, and to investigate with friendly curiosity their effect on us. The practices invite us to allow things to be as they are without doing anything to change them – at least not reactively. This gives us the chance to practise developing qualities of stillness, patience, openness, acceptance and letting go – so that whatever we learn within the meditation practice, the benefits seep into our everyday life.
